Affordable Housing
Enabling people to afford functional, energy-efficient, stylish
housing has always been a passion for Howard + Phillips Design Partners' designer,
Ross Howard.
As a result of this passion, Ross has designed an Affordable
Housing prototype costing under $100,000. The two-bedroom house incorporates an
efficient way of building with preassembled panels that can be sent anywhere in
Australia. Elegant in its simplicity, the light-filled house features two large decks
emphasising indoor and outdoor transits.
In this prototype, architecture and building have achieved energy
rating standards embracing passive solar principles, an efficient use of materials, a
sense of spaciousness on a reduced footprint and visual diversity while also being
contemporary in design and balanced with an affordable threshold.
The project succeeds in major energy savings from reduced power
consumption with an abundance of controlled natural light, avoiding unnecessary reliance
upon artificial lighting as well as incorporating natural cross-ventilation reducing the
need for space cooling.
